Frequently Asked Questions

1.         How long is your minimum presentation?

I like to have at least two hours—I prefer a half a day or a whole day, but for evening presentations for parents, two hours is ideal. <top>

2.         Why did you take time off from your speaking?

I took time off from speaking as I developed and wrote the Parent Coach Certification® Training Program in collaboration with Seattle Pacific University. Growing the PCI to its current growth took a lot of time. Now that it is a stable non-profit organization, with other staff members to care for it competently I can turn more attention to accepting speaking invitations once again. <top>

3.         Why did you write the book on media violence with Lt. Col. Dave Grossman?

I wrote Stop Teaching Our Kids to Kill because Dave asked me to collaborate with him. After reading my book, Screen Smarts, he contacted me. I invited him to the house for dinner so he could meet Dr. Brandon Centerwall and learn about Brandon’s interesting research (which we later put in the book). The book was conceived over an Italian dinner and red wine! <top>

4.         What is your next book going to be about and when will it be out?

My next book is The Vital Five. It will be out in January of 2009. I am updating and adding to my current research about these incredibly important developmental needs that just aren’t getting me in our media saturated world. I am passionate about helping parents leverage their precious time and limited energy resources in ways that will catalyze more energy, creativity, and enjoyment for them in their parenting. The Vital Five will do that because their children will be getting what they need. <top>

5.         Why did you start the Parent Coaching Institute?
When we parent well, we do change the world. I founded the PCI on the basis of this inspiring idea. Each of us as a parent has a sacred trust to give back to society by making sure our children are not only fit for society but fit to improve society, as well. Each parent is one small part of a much greater whole. Yet, without our small contribution, there is a hole in the whole. With too many such holes, the fabric of our very society tears to shreds as we see in our current state of crisis. <top>

It was sadly ironic that Stop Teaching Our Kids to Kill: A Call to Action Against TV, Movie, and Video Game Violence, was set to be published a few weeks after the tragedy at Columbine in 1999. After Columbine, I found myself depressed and trying to figure out HOW to reach parents with accurate information, encouraging support, and compassionate listening to help and empower them for all the new emerging challenges in raising children in our increasingly complex society. I had a thought that it is in relationships that we grow our best selves most often. I looked to a coaching model to provide a relationship-centered support system for families, and the PCI and a specific coaching model that I developed was born!
